Beauharnais, Eugène de
(1781-1834)
   prince, general
The son of Alexandre Beauharnais and Joséphine Tacher de la Pagerie, and brother of hortense de beauharnais, Eugène de Beauharnais was born in Paris and was later adopted by Napoléon Bonaparte (see Napoléon I) who married his widowed mother in 1796. Eugène accompanied Napoléon on his campaigns in Italy (1797) and in Egypt (1798), and he became a general in 1804. The next year, Napoléon made him a prince of the Empire and viceroy of Italy. Eugène de Beauharnais distinguished himself in Russia in 1812 and at the battle of Lutzen, Germany (1813). Then, after having courageously defended Italy against the Allies, he sought refuge in Munich with Maximilian I of Bavaria, whose daughter, Augusta, he had married in 1809. In 1817, Eugène's father-in-law made him duke of Leuchtenberg and prince of Eichstàtt.
